Just remember to graphite the hell out of the axles, that trick won me a 3rd place trophy in my first Pinewood Derby.

Good luck! And seconded on graphite the hell out of the axles, if you get a chance wear them in by spinning then wheel with a drill or something.

Remember to have one of the wheels tilted up, you’ll gain and edge. It’ll make the car faster due to less friction.

Now I have to tell my own pinewood derby story. When I was 9 or so, I was in Cub Scouts and took part in the annual pinewood derby. My mom was married to an electrical engineer, and he was convinced that he could design the fastest car in the world. He used a belt sander to shape it, then devised an intricate system of weights that could be added or subtracted to get it to the perfect weight. My mom painted it. My contribution was finding a little Playskool figure to sit in it. I finished last in every race I ran, and received the Square Wheel Award. The moral of the story: don’t let an EE design a race car.

This is my car build from last year. Not the fastest, but that on purpose to get better video.
It has a 3D printer holder for the camera and is painted as a movie chase car.
My sons car won our troop races this year and is headed to districts in April. Proud because he did most of it himself.

I once built one that looked like a auto union stromlinie it was freaking rad and never really finished a race.

I won, I mean my son won the last two years. There is a 15 min video on youTube that show you what works to make it fast. It will help. Thant and about 120$ of axle benders and jigs. It looks like a car that will win the “coolest design” award. Mine have gotten a little better every year, Good luck.

our troop included events for distance, straight tracking and rolling onto a dartboard-like target. the engineered “ringer” cars don’t do anything but spin out.

I remember fondly when I was doing the pinewood derby as a kid. I wish there was a place where grown-ups could do this kind of stuff. I sooooo badly want to build and race one. I have ideas kicking around my head on how to make it better. I don't know if it would work though.
